Inflation

It's no secret that your dollar doesn't go as far as it used to. With gas prices quickly skyrocketing toward $5 per gallon is it any wonder that the cost of most consumer goods has increased as well? With the current unrest in the Middle East it doesn't look like shoppers will be getting relief any time soon from manufacturers who pass on their increased transportation expenses to the to us at the supermarket and stores like Walmart and Target. While 2011 will see an increase in most consumable goods we will also see an increase in travel expenses, automobile expenses, clothing, and recreational expenditures as well as a myriad of other things. Here is a list of 10 things that will cost more in the upcoming year as well as a few things that will see a drop in cost.

10 Things That Will Cost More This Year

  1. Corn-According to the USDA he cost of corn has risen steadily during the past year due to an increased demand for ethanol products, economic growth in developing countries, and tight global grain supplies. Corn is also used in feed for animals like cows, pigs, and chickens. Farmers and processed food producers are all competing for the same grain thereby driving the price of corn higher and higher. Manufacturers pass on the increase to consumers through either raising the prices of their goods or charging the same price for a smaller package.
  2. Sugar- The cost of sugar has also increased doubling in just the past two years helping to raise the cost of sweetened groceries. With the increase in sugar prices I have to wonder if cereal manufacturers are actually trying to make their products more healthy by decreasing the amount of sugar in them or if they are just trying to save a buck.
  3. The Dollar Menu- The dollar menu is quickly becoming a thing of the past. Fast food restaurants like McDonald and Taco Bell have already begun to increase the prices of their dollar menu items by as much as 50% and it won't be long before other quick stops will follow their lead.
  4. Postage- In 2001 it cost just 33 cents to mail a letter in the Continental United States. In 2011 the cost for mailing the same envelope is 44 cents. If the post office has their way that amount will increase to help cover their mounting expenses including retiree health insurance benefits.
  5. Airfare- The cost of flying anywhere is increasing. The average fair for flying on United Airlines has risen over 25% from a year ago and the cost of flying Southwest has increased 15%. The reason for the hikes? The higher cost for fuel coupled with a decreased flight schedule. Look for airlines to get more creative in their optional charges as well. Things like carry-ons charges, food, beverages, headsets, and blankets are all expected to increase.
  6. Clothing-The cost of cotton is currently 80% higher than in was in 2010 due to a global shortage. The increase will result in at least a 15% hike in the cost of clothing for the summer. Clothing isn't the only cotton good that will be effected bedding and home furnishings will also see a price increase.
  7. Cable Television-Direct TV customers saw a rate increase of over $5 per month beginning last February and it won't be long before Time Warner Customers see an increase of 7%. Dish Network customers be ready to pay 12% more.
  8. NetFlix- Home delivery of Netflix DVD's will be more expensive for new and existing customers. Service costs will rise from $8.99 to $9.99 and $13.99 to $14.99.
  9. Movie Date-The cost of going to the movies will rise significantly in 2011. Movie executives are losing a ton of money due to increased pirating and movies streaming on the internet. They need to recoup their costs so they are passing their losses onto consumers. Gone are the days of being able to go to the movies on a date night for $20. With the cost of tickets, popcorn, and a drink your average date will set you back between $35 and $40.
  10. Chocolate-Say it ain't so...but unfortunately it is. With a huge increase in the cost of both cocoa and sugar manufacturers are planning to charge more for chocolate. Hershey's is planning a 9.6% increase across the board for their products and expect other chocolate producers to follow suit.

Things That Will Cost Less

The most significant drops in prices this year will be in the area of consumer electronics.

  1. Blue Ray Players-The cost of blue ray players has dropped significantly and will continue to plummet in the upcoming year. Be prepared to spend $39 for a player that would have cost $80 just 2 years ago.
  2. WII System Bundles-I am so excited about the drop in prices for the Wii. You will be able to get the same system that once would have set you back almost $300 for just $99. What a bargain.
  3. HDTV's-Just 2 years ago a 55in HDTV would have cost almost $1200. In 2011 be prepared to pay just $600 for the same television!

Yeah there are rough seas ahead for us all. Things will only get worse too. As more countries become imdustrialized, the demand for these items will also cause prices to increase. We are so dependant on fossil fuels that an increase in its price also has the affect of increasing the price of everything else. On another note, they say that the world is going to run out of chocolate soon too.

Hahaa! I love that you've looked on the bright side a bit with the things that are costing less. Tech in general is coming down in costs- smart phones and tablets are less expensive and more accessible. At least we have that!

Life is getting harder and financially tough. I know I'm watching my pennies closely and since gas is nuts...I'm traveling less and less. Living on a fixed income is the pits.

Sad times ahead for many. The cost of gas is prohibitive but some need to travel. Grow your own food is a good start!

I agree that growing your own food is a good start. The problem that I see with the gas situation is that soon people who are living on very little income or a fixed budget will have to choose between purchasing the gas they need to get to work or the food they need to feed their children. Honestly-I'm a little scared.

Hmm... but when times get tough, we can't EAT our Blue Ray players! Went to Taco Bell today. The simple chicken burrito has just gone up from 99 cents to $1.29. That is a 30% increase. Now that is steep!

mikicagle Hub Author 13 months ago

Ron Smith-I hear you buddy. It's on my to get list as soon as the price falls. PDXBuys-I agree totally. Unfortunately I don't think the prices will stop there. Shipping companies will pass their increased cost to manufacturers, manufacturers will pass that cost on to consumers. People who are having a hard enough time making ends meet are going to be in trouble. Honestly when minimum wage is just over $7 per hour and the price of gas is over $4 in some places people just won't be able to afford to drive to work!

Very informative Hub! It seems every time I go to the grocery store most things have gone up...it's quite depressing! I've already cut down on a lot of things like new clothes, eating out, etc...but feel like there will be more cutting on other things soon. Thanks for the info.

Miki, great information. So a lot of people have been investing in commodities due to the strong rise (Gold, Oil, Silver, Sugar, etc). I think when the Fed Reserve ends their QE2 policy and interest rates start to rise, inflation will slow.

I also did a hub on gas prices and believe it is heading higher at least through the summer unless corporate earnings are weak (they have so far been very strong)

Thanks again, good hub.

Catgypsy it's hard for me to believe that $50 only buys a small bag of groceries these days. I remember when my husband and I could eat for 2 weeks on $50. LRCBlogger I hope you are right and inflation slows-I recently heard that the oil companies will be announcing record profits next week. If that's true I think that it is time we all buy bikes, or horses, or scooters, or something! :)

Very interesting hub. If there ever was a time to start gardening, that time is now! As for the price of chocolate, I've heard some mixed reports. I heard a few weeks ago or so where the price of cocoa is supposed to plummet due to the situation in Ivory Coast (the world's biggest cocoa producer) drawing to a close. OTOH, as you said, the prices of sugar, transportation, etc. just might keep the chocolate prices going up.

Another thing that has shot up in price is coffee. I nearly had a heart attack when I went to the store a couple of weeks ago to get some coffee beans and the price had gone up by as much as $1 a bag! It's all very sad really.:(

John Orton-I agree about the blue ray. Truefaith-I knew about the coffee forecast as well. I don't drink it so I can't feel your pain-but chocolate? That hurts.

Cool facts. We keep getting older and the prices keep getting higher. I can't wait till my son grows up and has to pay an inflated $40k for a motorbike because cars are way too expensive to drive due to gas prices.

Good Hub, totally agree with the prices going up. Im sure we will find a way though it, I cant see a large revolt over chocolate going up 9% in price (although I really wish gas would drop in price.)

There's good reason to be concerned about the future. I'm living below the level of poverty and actually doing rather well. I refuse to pay the high prices (gas and food especially), so I bought a road bike, learned to cook at home with bulk foods and shop at thrift stores. But there's only so much one can do. What's unnerving is that there's a segment of people raking in money like never before. The masses can fight back in a nonviolent way, however, by not feeding the system. I'm keeping my money at home.

The saddest one for me is Netflix. How dare they charge a couple bucks more each month for me to get unlimited movies? Well... I suppose I can let it fly.

Thanks for the heads up with these!

Wimbles my heart goes out to you and I find it absolutely repulsive that the oil companies reported record profits for this past quarter. I don't believe in big government but it's time something is done to reign these unscrupulous bastards in.

randomperson 13 months ago

Thats great.... things i like way more such as corn, cable, airfare, clothes, etc are going to cost more but that great ole Wii system bundle will be at the low price of a staggering $100? thanks!

I think you are spot on on all of your analysis, so good job. Interestingly regarding corn, it is mostly NOT used for food. In fact, a very small percentage of corn is used for human consumption. 58% is used for feed, so certainly if any commodity were to be mostly affected by corn prices rising, it would be meat prices. Incidentally, a box of corn flakes actually only uses about a dime's worth, or maybe 15 cents worth of corn. So, theoretically even if corn prices doubled, it wouldn't account for much of a price increase for your bowl of cereal, but you CAN bet that the cereal makers would certainly take advantage of the "opportunity" to justify a price increase. BTW, have you seen meat prices lately? On my last visit to the store pork chops were ON SALE for $3.49 per pound. Last year at this time they were usually less than $2.00 per pound regular price. Perhaps corn is the reason? Or at least part of it, in addition to the rising cost of fuel.

Two ways to offset the issues? Own shares in the oil companies, and only buy things when they are on sale, and stock up so that you can afford to wait out the higher prices—which always eventually do come back down to reality. Decreasing short term demand in this way also forces companies to drop prices to increase volume.

Great hub.

mikicagle Hub Author 13 months ago

Springboard I think companies will use any excuse to justify raising their prices. Gas is over $5 a gallon in Orlando, Florida. Some people blame the oil companies others blame the government for not allowing drilling in certain places in the United States-I don't care who's to blame let's just fix the problem before we increase the number of working poor in this country.
