My Website Adventure

Hello again. I wanted to write this hub to share some things that I have learned since I began building my own website on Wordpress and using Godaddy for hosting. If you haven't read my earlier hub on setting up your own wordpress website using godaddy.com I invite you to read it now. If you have read it then you may find this information helpful. It has to do with using your adsense and amazon associates account to monetize your site, two things you are definately going to want to do if you take the time to set up your site.

Plugins and Widgets

As you may know I have never set up a website before so the whole process hasn't been easy for me. I am a quick learner though and am pretty good at spotting some things that just don't add up.

I wanted to add AdSense to my site but I didn't know how to go about doing it. So I looked in the handy plug ins offered by Wordpress and wouldn't you know it there were several programs to choose from. I chose a plug in that had been recommended for being easy to use and added it to my site. As I was customizing it and setting it up for my site I noticed that someone had already put their affiliate code in the spot where I was supposed to put mine. No problem, I just deleted their code and put mine in-problem solved right? Wrong.

I began experimenting with templates for my site and when I finally decided on one that I liked I went to my Wordpress Dashboard and checked my settings. When I checked on my AdSense plug in I noticed something rather strange. My AdSense code was missing and in it's place was the code that I had deleted! After a little bit of research I discovered that this wasn't a strange occurrence, but rather a intentional act by the plug in creator to hijack AdSense income by having their account credited with the clicks made by visitors to my site. Needless to say I deleated the plug in.

Rather than deal with Wordpress on this matter I went directly to the AdSense website to find out how I could add it to my site without the "help" of a plug in. There is a way to do it and it really isn't hard. If you are familiar with the Wordpress dashboard you should have no problem understanding these step by step directions:

  1. Click on the Apearance drop down menu on the left hand side of your page.
  2. Click on widgets-this will take you to a screen where you can customize the widgets on your web pages.
  3. Insert a TEXT widget into one of your sidebars-then open up the widgets drop down menu. You will see a box where you can insert HTML.
  4. Log into your AdSense account and go to the AdSense Setup section.
  5. Choose Adsense for content. On the next page choose Image Ads Only in the drop down menu next to Ad Unit and press continue.
  6. Choose the format for your Adsense ad-you can get a banner, vertical advertising, or box advertising and press continue.
  7. Skip the choose ad channel page-just press continue.
  8. On the next page click on submit and get code,
  9. The next page will supply you with your ad code-copy it and paste it in the TEXT widget on your Wordpress page. Press Save and you're done!! It's that simple-now you don't have to worry about someone else hijacking your clicks!!

Amazons A Store

If you are using Amazon on your hubs you know how lucrative it can be. You can place items on specific pages on your Wordpress website by simply adding the html at the end of your posts. But what if you want something a little bit bigger than that?  Why not create your own AStore?  Amazon gives you the ability to create your own store-stock it with Amazon products-and put it on your website.  The benefits are enormous-the people browsing your website don't have to leave to go to Amazon to look for products. Your store comes complete with a shopping cart feature-and Amazon logos for brand recognition.

Creating an AStore isn't complicated. Log into your existing Amazon Associates account and click on the AStore link at the top of the page. Amazon will walk you through the rest. When you are ready to put your store on your site simply create a new page, title it STORE-then use the Amazon code for putting the store on the page. Be sure to go to the Page Attributes box on the left hand side of your screen and choose No Sidebars under template.  You don't want your store to be cluttered with AdSense ads or other sidebar items.

That's It

I hope I didn't confuse you too much and my directions are easy to follow. If you have any questions for me just leave a comment or email me directly and I will help if I can-but remember I am no expert. I am simply learning as I go.  If you want to see my Adsense and Astore up and running you can visit my website www.mikapedia.com.  but remember I am just beginning and the site is no where near where I want it to be, so please don't critique me-I know it needs work.

Hi miki - This is a pretty handy-dandy article. That was cool about the pre-affiliated plug-in. Gotta watch the freebies, don't you?

Gus :-)))

People are so creative when it comes to making money...now if they would only direct that energy to positive things! Good to know!

I agree Charlise. If the plug-in is "free" it should truly be free
