Daug

Several years ago my randy pug got my red miniature dachshund pregnant. At the time I had no idea what the puppies would look like. I didn't know whether the puppies would all look the same or if some would look like my pug and some like my doxie. Would they have pug heads and doxie bodies? Would they have doxie head and pug bodies? Who in the world would want to own a puppy that was such an odd mixture? I poured over the Internet searching for information about what the puppies might be like-and didn't have a lot of success. Finally I stumbled across the term DAUG and found a website that had information as well as pictures of pug/doxie puppies. To my surprise I found out that the DAUG is an actual recognized hybrid mix and there are people all over the United States who want to own one.

My doxie has had 2 additional litters since that time-and her puppies are in great homes all over the United States; New York, Boston, Pennsylvania, Baton Rouge, Houston, Orange County, Seattle, and Portland. I wanted to share some of the information that I have about these great puppies with anyone who might be interested in having a Daug become a member of their family.

Our Puppies

Bella, our doxie, weighs approximately 15 pounds. Our pug Monster weighs roughly about the same although he has put on some weight lately and has ballooned up to around 18 lbs. Both dogs are pure bred and in excellent health.

Monster sheds ALOT and SNORES loudly, but has an absolutely fabulous temperment and is the sweetest dog you will ever meet. Monster never meets a stranger and assumes that everyone loves him just as much as I do. Bella on the other hand doesn't shed much. Her temperment is a bit high strung-she is a barker. She barks at everyone and everything all the time which quite honestly drives us crazy at times. She is absolutely beautiful and has the most expressive eyes you will ever see on a dog.

Bella has had either 4 or 5 puppies in each of her litters.  The puppies range in color from a light sandy color to a deeper red color.  One of the puppies actually looked brindle.  You can see the color range in the pictures that I have posted.  As you can also tell by the pictures the puppies don't look like either a pug or doxie.  The are a mixture of both.  Their heads are bigger like a pugs with floppy puggish ears.  Their snouts though are not pushed in like a pugs-but they aren't long like a doxies either-they are somewhere in between.  Their bodies are long like a doxies-but have bigger chests more like the pugs.  Their tails are long and they can either be straight, or curled like a pugs.

The puppies have all had excellent temperments, more like their father's than their mothers.  They love to be held and have their tummies rubbed-just like their dad.  And just like their dad they are very friendly and playful.  The puppies do not take after their dad in the are of intelligece however.  Our Monster is not the smartest dog on the block and thankfully the puppies are smart like their mom.  They are very easy to housebreak and train.

The puppies love to be around both adults and children and make excellent companions.  Many of my puppies are lucky enough to be in families with children while the others are lucky enough to be the "children" of the adults that they live with.  I get letters and emails weekly from the people who have adopted my puppies letting me know how they are doing.  I even received a Christmas card this year complete with a portrait of my puppy "Rowdy"-all grown up and being spoiled terribly by the couple that adopted him.

If you like pugs and doxies but want the best of both worlds-consider adopting a Daug.  They make excellent pets and companions, and will keep you happy and laughing for many years to come.

I'm not very sure but I think there's a breed of dog which are called Puggles (Beagle and Pug) and I think the Daushaund breed is related to Beagles(my sis told me)and Rowdy, Plato and Lolie looks exactly like the Puggle breed I mentioned

The puggles look similiar but are bigger. The pug/weinie mix have very short legs and long weinie bodies. I need to post some of the recent pics of the puppies-I will also post a link to their video on Utube.

so cute, I love my pug but he is the craziest dog that i ever had. I have dark wood floors in my home and my pug is cream colored, if only I had know how much they shed. Great article and loved the pictures!

mikicagle Hub Author 23 months ago

they do shed something awful don't they. i brush my Monster daily and he still loses enough fur everyday to make a new dog!!

neale 21 months ago

we have a 4 month old daug, his name is Rolo, and he is absolutely adorable...

The key to pug shedding is a high quality diet combined with a round rubber curry comb for dogs.

This looks like a giant rubber bar of soap with teeth. Rub pug in circular motions daily.

But do it outside. This will remove all the dead hair.

It won't stop the shedding but will lessen it. If you aren't on a high quality food, pugs shed even more than normal.

Try a curry comb for dogs. Do not use this on a doxie as their hair is a different texture and they often don't like it.

Pugs usually think of it as a full body massage.

I have a little Doxie puppy myself. His name is Bimmer (pronounce BEAM-er) and he is a rare chocolate and tan miniature dachshund! He is loud and rowdy and rambunxious, but we love him. At barely twelve weeks old he knows sit, down (lay down), off (get off of it), speak, fetch, and drop it. He is sooo smart!

Anyway, your puppies are soooo cute! I would love to have one if only I had the time, money, and space! I live in a small apartment near Seattle, Washington and my Bimmer is almost too much right now... but when I get on my feet I may contact you about getting one!

Thanks for the advice Tirzah-Monster does love being brushed. Neale I know exactly what you mean about the daugs. We ended up keeping one out of a litter last spring and absolutely adore him-we named him Tonka. Wrhapsody-the best thing about my DAUG is he got the best of both worlds from his parents, he is sooo smart like his mom, but extremely loveable like his dad.

I found my Daug at the local shelter. He's such a joy!

Brittany 15 months ago

I just got a 6 week old Pug/Dachshund mix I named Mario. He is all black and has a cute little pug face and curly tail and the long body and short legs of a Dachshund. I found him in the paper for free - Don't think the people realized they had a "designer" dog! He is so intelligent and already knows his name and "No!" He loves sleeping on his back and his favorite game is tug-of-war! I am worried he will be chubby when he's grown because he is such a little pig now! I have him on Science Diet and Blue Buffalo now though so as long as I feed him proper-sized servings I think he will be fine.

mikicagle Hub Author 15 months ago

Brittany-be careful. These puppies have a really bad habit of looking soooooo cute when they beg for food you can't help but feed them. Tonka has fat rolls above his legs and on his back!

We have two pure pred pugs and recently got a peiner (here we thought we were so cleaver with that! lol) she was 10 months old when we rescued her and we are her 4th home so we want to be her forever but we are having some MAJOR issues with house training and chewing (something we never had with our pugs) I am not familiar with the doxie breed so am looking for any resources to help us. Any ideas?

mikicagle 15 months ago

Jamime-my doxie is 6 years old and still has issues with housetraining. The breed is very, very, stuborn. What worked best for us is to take her for a walk each night before bedtime, then have her sleep in a crate. In the morning the first place she went was outside. My doxie moved in with my daughter and guess what-NO POTTY PROBLEMS!! My pug Monster was a chewer for about the first year. My peiner Tonka is a MAJOR chewer as well. The only advice I can give to you is have PLENTY of chew toys, bones, and treats for your baby and if you catch her chewing something she isn't supposed to redirect her to her chew toys. You really have to set her boundries and let her know what she is allowed to have and what she isn't. Just be patient-she will pick it up, it just takes time.

I absolutely adore my Tonka-he is the funniest, cutest, sweetest dog we have ever had.

Amanda 14 months ago

I have 2 girls left from a litter my dachshund had in december, they are about 3 months old and are the greatest. very sweet, very loving, always wanting to cuddle, and are great with adults, and kids. (I have a 2 year old and 4 year old sister that adore them and feel the same way back) my dachshund had a litter last may of 2010 and we ended up keeping a male and a female because we just fell in love. If anyone is interested, like i said there are 2 girls left.

How was their mom's delivery? was it a normal delivery or C-Section? I would really like to know about how their mom's delivery went... You see, my pug got my miniature dachshund pregnant, too and I'm worried that the puppies might be a little big for her body.

Thanks. :)

How cute those puppies are *_*

mikicagle profile image

mikicagle Hub Author 13 months ago

The deliveries went fine. She had several litters and was a super mom. Instinct took over and she delivered all but 1 puppy. She struggled a little and by the time we were able to get the little guy out he passed away :( but the remaining 5 from that litter came out perfectly. My Tonka is from that litter.

I love I guess what they call daug we call a pugeenie, and he is by far the most precious 6 week old pup you could ever ask for, we got our little yager on pure accedent, a friend of mine her sweet little doxie was "got" by her in laws pug and thus yager was born.. We were not in market for a puppy, we have our older fat chug, and 4 childen, but my cousin sent me a pic of him and my husband and I instantly feel for our little man!!

Hevans 11 months ago

My Tonka is the best. He took a flying leap into the pond in the field by our house the other day. I couldn't believe how brave he was. They are the best dogs.

Susan 11 months ago

Do you know of any pug/doxie breeders?

I have one and we just love him to bits and would like to find him a playmate.

Thanks

HI Susan,

Check on dogbreederinfo.com and use the search term DAUG. My Tonka's mother passed away so we won't be having any more litters-but they are the absolutely best dogs around.

Rachita 10 months ago

I adopted two year-old Daugs from the SPCA about 2 years ago. They both are from the same litter and get along fabulously! They look adorable (and one of them has a snaggle tooth and an underbite that just adds even more to the cuteness factor). I didn't realize they were recognized hybrids since I was told they were "pug-mixes" by the shelter. Can't believe the previous owners didn't want these two babies! They both are little piggies when it comes to food and constantly amaze me with their cleverness :)

Rachel 9 months ago

My Doxie (Izzie) is due to have her pups any day. To my dismay I went out of town and had no choice but to leave Izzie outside on a chain (shes an indoor dog) and have a friend check in on her every day. When I got home I noticed a pug hanging around but apparently they'd already bred, so....I'll have some Daugs ready in a few months!! ;) Point being I really enjoyed this site and wanted to say thank you for the insight. Anyone wanting a pup and interested in driving to Louisiana to get it hit me up! rdouget28@gmail.com

Rachita you will have many many years of great times with your new family members. They are AWESOME dogs.

Rachel take a look through my previous feedback-there are several people who have enquired about puppies and perhaps you can find some families for yours!

Hi -We bought a Daug about 5-6 years ago. Her name is Daisy and we are really glad we got her. Her temperament is perfect and she is great with kids. Very smart too. Albeit sometimes too smart. We might be looking sometime in the future to get another one. It is just so hard to find breeders for them it seems.

im get a pug dachhound mix pup thare so cute omg i love mix bred dogs and animals

Meghan 3 months ago

I have a 7 year old puggle and wanted to get another one. I stumbled upon a "dawg" at least that's what the pet store called it and just had to get her. She is precious. Anyway thought I'd let everyone know the price in the nyc pet store was $1300. This was the first one they had ever sold and it's a pretty big store. If I had to guess this mixed breed will be the hottest item in the next 2 years. I will say my new little girl is pretty aggressive definitely more so than my puggle and I am a little cconcerned she is 2 months and I know she needs to teeth but she bites at my face not just y hands... Any advice on correcting that behavior?

I bought my little daug two years ago. He has the long body, short legs and adorable face. We got him the same day as our pug and they have been brothers ever since. Both are great little boyz.

I live in idaho and i had to put my year and 1/2 pug down and so i was looking for another dog and i came across these cute little guys and i was wondering where i could find one close to me?

I wish I could tell you. Check on the website that I have posted in article. Maybe there are some there. My doxie passed away and we had our Monster fixed so we won't be having any more puppies. They are pretty hard to find. Good luck with your search.

Tara 2 weeks ago

I have a Daug and she looks nothing like any of the other Daugs or even her brothers and sisters from her litter! She was the runt but she has pretty long cream-colored hair with even longer random black wiry hairs all over. She kind of has more of a pug face and has the cutest underbite ever! She does have a pug tail but she is rather skinny and doesn't have short legs or a single wrinkle! She's very different and unique and the most fun, lovable companion ever! I definitely recommend these dogs especially if you have children or other dogs...they love EVERYTHING!
