Search

When someone wants to find something on the internet they usually go through a search engine right? The big three search engines are Google, Bing, and Yahoo. Each of the search engine homepages have their own unique style and each offers their own unique ways to locate information. So which one is the best one for you to use? I've outlined the basics of each homepage in this hub so you can decide on the one you want to use the next time you need to conduct a search.

Yahoo! Mail

Yahoo!

Yahoo! Messenger

Yahoo! Sportacular

Yahoo

When you go to the site Yahoo.com to conduct a search be prepared to encounter a page with loads of information on it. Not only is there a search bar for you to use at the top of the page but there are side bars loaded with links to just about everything you may want: yahoo messenger, your yahoo mail account, yahoo autos, financial information, games, weather, movies, twitter, and lots of other interesting places. You will also be updated on current international, national, and local news as well as the hottest topics that people are searching for on the internet.

When you type a search term into the search box you will get a drop down menu that shows you what the most popular searches are that are related to that word. For example, I just put in the word DOG-the drop down box returned: UGLIEST DOG, DOG PILE, DOG BREEDS, DOG NAMES, and DOG THE BOUNTY HUNTER. I chose DOG BREEDS and was immediately directed to a page that listed websites concerning dog breeds.

The page also a included a side bar that was filled with other search terms for DOG BREEDS along with something called SEARCH PAD an application that will organize the websites you visit.

Overall if you use Yahoo.com as your search engine you will get a wealth of information.

Bing

The Bing Homepage is a lot less cluttered than the Yahoo Homepage.  You won't find a sidebar littered with a ton of thumbnails or a list of current news events.  What you will find is a simple webpage that has a simple sidebar that is self explanatory and easy to use.  The homepage also provides a link for you to access  MSN, your hotmail account, and a new link that will give you a tour of the newest applications available through Bing.

When I typed the term DOG into the search box it's drop down box returned: DOGPILE, DOG BREEDS, DOG NAMES, DOGS THAT DON'T SHED, DOGS THAT LOOK LIKE A TIGER, DOGS FOR SALE, and DOG THE BOUNTY HUNTER.  Once again I choose DOG BREEDS and was directed to a page that looked almost exactly like the page that was returned by Yahoo.  The one difference was the lack of an application that would organize and save the websites you visited.

Overall if you want to do a search using a site that has a very easy and straightforward homepage BING is for you.  Personally I find myself using Bing far more than I use Yahoo for one reason.  I am overwhelmed with the Yahoo homepage-when I am on it my A.D.D. kicks in and I suddenly forget what I went there for opting instead to read the newest news and gossip.

Google

The most minimalistic homepage by far is Google. The main feature of the page is the search box prominently displayed smack dab in the middle. You can use the homepage to access your other Google accounts including your gmail, your iGoogle page, adsense, adwords, Google Buzz, and your Blogger account. You can also use Google's advance search option, or access one of the language tools (something I use often to translate text from English to Spanish).

When I typed the search term DOG into the search box I got 10 terms in the Google drop down box including all of the terms that were returned with the other search engines with the addition of DOGS 101. For the last time I chose DOG BREEDS and was directed to a page that was much similar to the pages that were returned with the other search engines with the following additions: a tool that allows you to see the most popular searches for the past two days, Google Wonderwheel-an application that shows you long tailed keywords, sites with images, and the option to narrow down your search based upon several criteria.

Although Google's homepage is very simplistic don't be fooled. The homepage opens the door to a wealth of information and different tools that will optomize your searching journey.

I use Google. I was probably the last person on the planet to switch to it from Yahoo, which I used for years. I will probably be the last person to switch to whatever becomes "the good one" again, as I am lazy and resistant to change. :D

Great hub and voted up. You mentioned "Dog Pile". Do you remember the Dog Pile search engine from 2002?

I have a few SEO hubs as well.
